Agar

I think that Agar brought up some very interesting things about doing ethnography. Research in and of itself does imply a bit of ego. We are assuming that we have something new to say and to add. I think the important points that Agar makes is that ethnography cannot be objective, no matter how hard we try and no matter how many groundrules we create for ourselves. So, rather than trying to be objective, we need to be open about our subjectiveness. Figuring out how to incorporate those issues into a methodology could prove difficult, yet fruitful.
Another point I thought was interesting was his idea that all ethnographers should be studied. In many ways, most of us are. We have people observe us each day we teach, and then comment on that teaching at the end of the semester. We have department chairs observe us and then comment. However, this isn't the same as a systematic study, for sure.
Overall, I thought Agar brough up some very important things for ethnographers to consider, and it also became clear that when we become frustrated or confused in our research, we should reach out to others for help!
