In Class Exercise

I work at a small Midwestern university where we serve a large number of 1st generation and at-risk students. We have about a 25% minority (primarily African American) pouplation, although most of this minority population is from outside the Midwest. I am interested in how mixed levels of students (and various cultural background) and their interactions together influence their literacy development.

  1. Great idea Jessica. I doubt their is an instructor out there who has a class full of equally proficient students and certainly, the various levels must have some influence on literacy. Can't wait to read your conclusions.

  2. After more reading, I am interested in academic literacies, and particularly how students are socialized. In addition to the view of students, I also am interested in the view of teachers and how they believe first-year students are socialized. I'm going to keep working on these ideas.
